Students will partake in a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities that will show them a sample of what life was like for pioneer children. One of the activities will involve making a sock puppet. If you could please send an old sock and some buttons (or any other material suited to make their puppet), it would be greatly appreciated.

Arts
Today we spent the morning continuing our exploration of the Arts.
Music lessons continued with reading musical notation and applying them to good use by learning to play new songs on the recorder.
We are also working on a Reader's Theatre script of the Elephant's Child.
Science
By doing hands on experiments we explore the difference between pre-soaking bean seeds and planting them directly into soil medium. We also have other experiments underway where we will see the difference various soil types have on our bean seeds and eventual plants.

Comments & Future Events:
Today we had an informative and only slightly scary presentation. Ask your student about what happened to the pickle and how fast electricity travels.
A gentleman from Ottawa Hydro spoke to our class about electrical safety. We learned many interesting things about electricity and how to use it safely. We saw special safety gloves and glasses and learned about the ground pin on extension cords and electrical plugs and how important it is to handle them properly.
We know now that electricity must go to ground and that extra pin is what keeps us safe.
We heard a couple of true stories about how children got into trouble with electricity because they didn’t know what was dangerous. We now know that if a ball goes inside an electrical substation to leave it there and call Ottawa Hydro who will get it for us, happily, at no charge. You can ask your child about a GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) and how they keep us safe.

The Parent Council Presentation on Internet Safety last evening was amazing!
I learned so much and I thought I was pretty web aware.
The speaker last night had so many positive ideas on how to help keep children safe on the internet.
It was most helpful.
Some on the Council thought the speaker was so good, they might ask him back again another year.
For all those who missed this, I hope it happens.
Many thanks to Janet and the other parents for organizing this most informative evening.

Now that the Interest Talks are completed, you might like to have your student move on to the next step. The Royal Canadian Legion Annual Public Speaking Contest is a unique experience and there are $ cash prizes! I will send home a package of information on Tuesday, for you to consider. This is an optional activity for your student.
I will provide the information and will register your student if you choose to participate. I will also make some class time to assist your student with polishing their performance in front of an audience. However, if you choose to have your child take advantage of this opportunity you will need to provide the necessary transportation on Saturday, March 6, to 294 Cyr Avenue, Ottawa (Vanier) for 8:30 am. The contest starts at 9:00 am. You will also need to follow through with on-going practice at home between now and the contest date of March 6.
In the meantime here are the links and uploaded file for the RCL Zone 5 Judging Guidelines. Please use and return the Student Registration Form I will send home Tuesday, February 16, with parent's signature. I will send home a mostly completed registration form. Any spaces left blank, age, topic, email, address, student's and parent's signatures, etc. I am asking you to complete and return to school as soon as possible.

The deadline to register for The Royal Canadian Legion Zone G5 ** Public Speaking Contest ** is February 26th, 2010. However, the application form should be handed in as soon as possible to reserve your child's placement in the group of 25 contestants.
Please return it signed to school A.S.A.P.
