TERM TWO PLANS
On Thursday, February 17 our class will participate in a �Scientists in Schools� workshop. We will be exploring Forces and Pulleys & Gears. This leads nicely into our two Social Studies topics on history. Both the Grade 3 and the Grade 4 history periods used these science and technology topics extensively.
Medieval Times is a Grade 4 topic and Pioneer Times is on the Grade 3 curriculum. We will be examining, comparing and contrasting both periods together in our combined Grade 3 - 4 classroom. These 2 different time periods of western society lend themselves to interesting comparisons. The purpose of this assignment is to learn about their topic, share their knowledge and to learn to do research, using the �DCR research method�.
In the coming weeks all students will choose a particular topic to study and share in class. Here is a link to some medieval topics which my students have presented in the past to our class. http://briargreenps.ocdsb.ca/dungeon/topics.htm Students may also suggest some topics they would like to research and I will be posting some pioneer topics as well. If they wish to choose a topic not listed, they must have it approved and verify that their topic is a valid one. We don�t want to listen to 10 different presentations on medieval weapons or medieval fashion and so I plan to spread out the topics to give a balanced view; which is another reason why their topic needs to be approved. All topics will be approved and finalized by Friday, February 25, so the research can begin Monday, February 28.
You can help by borrowing books on their chosen topic and reading these books during the daily reading homework. You can also do internet research with them during this regular, daily homework time. Reading a book, or reading on the internet is reading, after all.
There are many resources on this page to help you keep your students safe on the internet. This is a good idea because we are going to use the internet more this term to do research on 2 Social Studies topics. Please click on this link to see our tentative weekly schedule. Be aware that our schedule varies according to special events and student need. I hope you will use this information to help you to schedule appointments when your child must be away from school. Math, for example is a subject that builds on the previous lessons and it would be best not to miss these lessons. We do many hands on math explorations where students build math concepts and this is more difficult to do at home.
